Terminology Tuesday: Numinous
An aspect of religious experience discussed by Rudolf Otto in The Idea of the Holy. Otto described a type of religious experience typically associated with theism in which God is experienced as “wholly other”—a mysterious, awesome, fascinating object. The majesty and holiness of God produce a sense of awe, dependence and even fear on the part of the subject of the experience.
