Evangelical Perspectives on the Presidential Election

Today is the day. After months of campaign rallies, debates, speeches, and TV interviews, the candidates for President of the United States now watch as the people decide. What will it come down to? Pennsylvania? Florida? North Carolina? Will it be a surprise landslide? Will a third party candidate win any electoral votes? How will we all feel tomorrow morning? Will we even know by then?

I’ll be honest; I’m super tempted to just sit in front of screens all day and listen for the latest updates. I’m grateful for my local pastor who reminded us this past Sunday that God is in control and we need to pray like crazy today.

“Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.”

– Romans 13:1 CSB

As he said to us, “It is better to not vote and pray than to vote and not pray.” Sobering and so, so good.

Now, don’t hear what my pastor and I aren’t saying. What we aren’t saying is voting is pointless. On the contrary, I believe it is such an amazing privilege and we ought to cherish it.

The question is: how should you vote as a follower of Christ?

We’ve established that you should vote with confidence in the sovereignty of God, but what else? Who should we vote for? That can be a head-spinning question for many. My hope is you find these resources helpful as you decide. (If you’ve already decided, as I have, these are still very insightful Christian perspectives that you may find more appealing than what you see on TV or social media this evening.)
