Terminology Tuesday: Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Italian astronomer and physicist and one of the great early modern scientists. Galileo invented the modern science of mechanics and defended Copernicus’s theory that the sun is the center of the solar system. He was called before the Inquisition and forced to recant his views. This episode is often cited as evidence of the conflict between religion and science. However, it is noteworthy that Galileo was himself deeply religious and even gave theological justifications for his approach to science.
